In the mountains of the Basque Country, a mother and her daughter take shelter in a ruined hut that seems uninhabited.

A new technologically-superior Soviet nuclear sub, the Red October, is heading for the U.S. coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius. The American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack. Her face reminds the doctor of his late wife, and he begins to pursue her, which annoys the trio.
