Mathias Pascal, saddled with a stupid wife and a nagging mother-in-law, leaves home and is extremely lucky at several gambling resorts. He returns home and discovers that a drowned man, fished out of the river, bears an uncanny likeness to him and is being buried by his family as him. This, to him, is a pleasant turn of events and he goes to Rome, where he falls in love with Louise Paleari. Count Papiano, a jealous suitor of Louise's, threatens him with arrest unless he produces credentials to prove his identity.

He is not amused by the idea, but there is no getting out of it. Suddenly, however, an event occurs that causes the couple to change their minds. The daughter of the store's owner, Inge Heiberg, is found unconscious in the store's courtyard, and Peter and Louise rush to her aid. The fainting spell turns out to be shrouded in mystery.

Victor comes to the village to erect a monument to his grandfather. Not finding the required photograph in the house, he turns to the village “collector” for help. The film is about the hero's senseless attempt to find peace of mind in the place where he spent his childhood. The background against which the action unfolds is a devastated Russian village with abandoned houses, uncultivated arable land, and a looted temple. Will life return here again?
