Hou Yao wrote, directed and starred in A Poet from the Sea (1927). It was shot in Stanley, Hong Kong. The surviving copy was only 23-minute long, but Hou Yao's romantic side was obvious through the scenic location and beautiful set-up. The love story between Poet (Hou Yao) and his lover (Lee Dan-dan) was pure and lyrical, a gem from China Sun Motion Picture Company (Shanghai) in the 1920s.

The multi-millionaire John Underhower travels from New York to Bavaria, where he’s bought a castle. The reason? He wants to prove there’s ghosts in the old building. John represents himself as a poor circus performer to his unsuspecting cousin Hyronimus, who works as a tour guide at the fortress. And Hyronimus has no shame in pretending to John, that he’s the proud owner of the castle. This little game soon leads to a lot of complications.

The film follows one of the many new aircraft carriers built since Pearl Harbor, known as THE FIGHTING LADY in honor of all American carriers, as it goes into action against the Japanese in the Pacific Ocean in 1943. See the ship and its pilots undergo their baptism of fire, attacking the Japanese base on Marcus Island. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in partnership with The Film Foundation.
